Jay Shah becomes new ICC Chair
Jay Shah, the former Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), officially began his tenure as the Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday, December 1. Shah succeeds Greg Barclay, who held the position since November 2020.
In his inaugural statement, Shah expressed gratitude for the support of ICC Directors and Member Boards, emphasizing his commitment to expanding cricket’s global reach. “I am honoured to take on the role of ICC Chair at such an exciting time for the sport. With cricket set to debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, we have an unparalleled opportunity to engage fans worldwide and grow the game,” he said.

Shah highlighted his key priorities, including leveraging cricket’s Olympic inclusion as a platform for globalization and accelerating the development of the women’s game. “We are at a pivotal moment, balancing the needs of multiple formats while ensuring the women’s game reaches its full potential. Cricket has immense potential globally, and I look forward to working with the ICC team and Member countries to seize these opportunities,” he added.
Shah’s rise to ICC Chair, elected unopposed in August 2024 after Barclay declined to seek a third term, was widely anticipated. His cricket administration career began in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), where he played a key role in the construction of the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2019, he became the youngest honorary Secretary of the BCCI, further cementing his position as a significant figure in cricket governance.
Acknowledging Barclay’s contributions, Shah stated, “I would like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership and the milestones achieved during his tenure. I aim to build on this foundation and work towards further expanding cricket’s global footprint.”
