India’s Virat Kohli Becomes First Batter to Cross 900 Rating Points in All Formats

Virat Kohli has once again etched his name in cricket history by becoming the first batter ever to achieve over 900 ICC rating points in all three formats of the game. Despite retiring from T20Is and Tests, Kohli continues to break records, with the International Cricket Council updating his all-time T20I rating to 909 points this week.

The update follows a re-evaluation of his T20I performances, particularly highlighting his match-winning 76 in the ICC T20 World Cup final last year, which marked his final appearance in the format. With this, Kohli has now achieved 909 rating points in T20Is, matching his highest rating in ODIs and joining his Test peak of 937, attained during the 2018 England tour. His new T20I rating is now the third-highest ever, just behind England’s Dawid Malan (919) and Suryakumar Yadav (912).

Kohli’s Test career saw its pinnacle in 2018, when he scored 593 runs in 10 innings during a tough series in England. His peak rating of 937 remains the highest for any Indian batter and the 11th-highest in Test history. That same year, in the ODI series against England, he piled up 191 runs in three matches, including two fifties, reaching his career-high ODI rating of 909.

At one point, Kohli held the number one ranking in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is simultaneously—a feat unmatched in modern cricket. His consistent dominance across formats has reinforced the argument that he may be the greatest all-format batter in cricket history.

In T20Is, Kohli finished his career with 4,188 runs in 125 matches at an impressive average of 48.69. He struck one century and 25 fifties, with his best score being 122 not out. He remains the third-highest run-scorer in the format’s history.

Earlier this year in May, Kohli also announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the new ICC World Test Championship cycle. His final red-ball series was a challenging tour of Australia, where he managed only 190 runs in nine innings, though he did register a century in Perth. Kohli retired as India’s fourth-highest Test run-getter, with 9,230 runs in 113 matches at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.

Kohli remains active in ODIs and recently played a crucial role in India’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy campaign. In that tournament, he scored 218 runs in five games, including a memorable century against Pakistan and a key fifty in the semifinal versus Australia. He currently has 14,181 runs in 302 ODIs, averaging 57.88, with 51 hundreds and 74 fifties. He stands as the third-highest ODI scorer of all time and second-highest for India.

Across formats, Kohli has scored 27,599 runs in 617 innings at an average of 52.27, with 82 centuries and 143 fifties. He is India’s second-highest run-scorer in international cricket and third overall in the world, showing his long-lasting performance, consistency, and versatility in modern cricket.
