Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi’s £190 Million Case Appeals Fixed for Hearing on June 29

  • Islamabad High Court to hear appeals filed by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi on June 29.
  • Adiala Jail authorities claim signed powers of attorney were ready on June 16 and lawyers were informed.
  • Court had earlier warned the defence it would proceed on the available record if arguments were not presented.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has scheduled June 29 for the hearing of appeals filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, against their convictions in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case.

According to the cause list issued by the registrar’s office, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif will hear the appeals. The petitions challenge the trial court’s verdict concerning the settlement of funds returned by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and the transfer of land linked to the Al-Qadir Trust.

In addition to the appeals, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have also filed contempt of court petitions, alleging delays in implementing the court’s directions regarding the submission of signed powers of attorney.

During previous proceedings, the defence informed the court that procedural difficulties and restricted access to the accused at Adiala Jail prevented them from obtaining the signed documents within the seven-day deadline set by the court.

However, in a fresh reply submitted to the IHC, the superintendent of Adiala Jail rejected the defence’s claims, stating that the powers of attorney had been prepared and signed on June 16. The jail administration further asserted that defence counsel Barrister Salman Safdar was notified via text message on the same day.

The response, accompanied by a screenshot of the message, alleged that the defence team deliberately chose not to collect the documents before the June 18 hearing. It also noted that despite repeatedly seeking adjournments on the grounds that meetings with the accused were not possible, the required documents had already been made available.

During an earlier hearing, the IHC bench cautioned the defence that if arguments were not presented on the next scheduled date, the court would proceed with the case based on the material already available on record.
