Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi move Supreme Court for sentence suspension in £190 million case

  • Appeals challenge Islamabad High Court’s decision refusing sentence suspension.
  • Petitioners cite legal, procedural and health-related grounds.
  • Supreme Court asked to suspend sentences and order their release.

PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have approached the Supreme Court, seeking suspension of their sentences in the £190 million case while challenging the Islamabad High Court’s decision rejecting their earlier applications.

According to the appeals, the petitioners argued that the Islamabad High Court dismissed their sentence suspension pleas despite repeated adjournments sought by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). They contended that the court did not consider key legal aspects before rejecting their applications.

The appeals stated that the Islamabad High Court rejected the pleas without conducting a preliminary review of the evidence, which the petitioners argued was not in line with the principles of justice.

The petitioners also alleged that jail authorities delayed obtaining signatures on legal documents. They further claimed that Imran Khan has lost around 85 percent of the vision in his right eye, while Bushra Bibi underwent eye surgery during her imprisonment without her family or legal counsel being informed.

According to the petitions, both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were held in a cell at Adiala Jail, where they alleged they were kept in solitary confinement, resulting in mental distress. The petitioners argued that their health concerns should have been taken into account while deciding the sentence suspension requests.

The appeals further alleged that NAB repeatedly sought adjournments, which the petitioners said delayed the proceedings.

The petitioners also argued that they had previously been granted bail during the trial and that some allegations had earlier been declared baseless. They maintained that the refusal to suspend their sentences was not consistent with legal principles.

The appeals also challenged the legality of the arrest procedure, stating that a superior court had previously ordered Imran Khan’s release in connection with the arrest. The petitioners further argued that the accountability proceedings were politically motivated and not conducted in accordance with the principles of a fair trial.

The petitions have requested the Supreme Court to set aside the Islamabad High Court’s decision, suspend the sentences of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, and order their release.
