FBR To Crack Down On Non-Filers Flaunting Wealth On Social Media After September Deadline
• FBR has prepared a nationwide plan to identify non-filers displaying wealth on social media.
• Individuals will be asked to explain their income, assets, expenditures and sources of funds.
• Formal enforcement action is expected to begin after September 30 if tax returns are not filed.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has finalized a major initiative aimed at bringing affluent non-filers into the tax net, with authorities preparing to take action against individuals who publicly display wealth, luxury assets and lavish lifestyles on social media despite not being registered taxpayers.

According to sources, the tax authority has compiled extensive data on individuals who frequently showcase expensive cars, motorcycles, boats, luxury residences, apartments, farmhouses and other high-value assets on social media platforms while remaining outside the documented tax system.
Under the plan, the FBR will issue notices to such individuals seeking comprehensive details about their income, assets, properties, expenditures and sources of funds. The objective is to determine whether their financial status and lifestyle are consistent with their declared income and tax records.
Officials said the initiative is part of a broader effort to expand Pakistan’s tax base and identify financially stable individuals who are not filing tax returns despite displaying significant wealth.
Sources revealed that the FBR has already collected substantial information during the current fiscal year. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has assisted tax authorities in identifying individuals and gathering relevant records to support the exercise.
In addition to social media activity, authorities have reportedly obtained information related to banking transactions, credit card usage, ATM card activity and other financial indicators. This data will be used to assess whether individuals have undisclosed income or assets that should be reflected in tax filings.
The FBR’s strategy includes a phased approach. In the first stage, individuals identified through the exercise will be given an opportunity to regularize their tax affairs voluntarily. They will be directed to file tax returns and submit the required financial information before September 30.
Tax officials said the notices will require recipients to explain their sources of income and provide supporting details regarding assets, properties and financial resources. The information will then be reviewed to determine whether any discrepancies exist between their lifestyle and declared tax profile.
Sources said formal enforcement measures are expected to begin from October 1, after the deadline for compliance expires. Individuals who fail to file tax returns, do not respond to notices, or provide unsatisfactory explanations may face legal action under relevant tax laws.
The tax authority believes the initiative will help reduce the size of the undocumented economy and improve tax compliance by ensuring that individuals with substantial financial means contribute to the national tax system.
Officials maintain that the campaign is not solely focused on social media content but is part of a wider data-driven effort that combines information from multiple sources to identify potential tax evasion and bring previously undocumented individuals into the formal economy.
