Elon Musk’s xAI Launches Grok 4 and Premium SuperGrok Heavy Subscription

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm xAI has officially launched its latest flagship model, Grok 4, along with a new high-end subscription tier called SuperGrok Heavy, priced at $300 per month. The announcement was made on Wednesday, drawing attention across the tech industry as xAI continues its push to compete with AI giants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Grok 4 introduces several advanced features, including the ability to analyze images and respond to a wide range of user queries. According to Musk, the model performs at a level “better than PhD level in every subject,” though he acknowledged it has yet to achieve any groundbreaking advancements in fields like technology or physics.

Alongside the base version, xAI also revealed Grok 4 Heavy—a more powerful variant intended for users demanding higher performance. This advanced version is available exclusively to subscribers of the newly introduced SuperGrok Heavy plan. Subscribers are promised early access to future tools such as an AI coding assistant and a video generation model.
Despite the technological upgrades, Grok has faced criticism over the past few weeks due to controversial outputs, prompting xAI to limit some of the model’s capabilities. The controversy, along with broader issues at Musk’s other ventures—such as the recent resignation of X CEO Linda Yaccarino—cast a shadow over the product launch. Nevertheless, the debut of Grok 4 has helped refocus attention on the model’s potential.
Grok 4 has performed well in academic benchmark tests, reportedly outperforming Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s o3, positioning it as a strong tool for research and development. Musk and xAI leadership were present at the launch event, emphasizing the company’s ambition to carve out a serious place in the competitive AI landscape.
However, the steep subscription cost and Grok’s prior missteps may complicate efforts to gain wide-scale adoption, especially among enterprise users. xAI plans to expand Grok’s use in business settings, but questions remain over how the model’s past behavior will impact trust and long-term integration.
