According to sources, the PCB is exploring ways to strengthen the national team’s performance and long-term planning by bringing experienced former players into influential roles. The move is being viewed as part of a broader effort to reshape Pakistan cricket’s management and decision-making structure ahead of important international assignments.
Among the names under consideration is former Pakistan captain Younis Khan, one of the country’s most successful Test cricketers. Sources said Younis is being strongly considered for the position of head coach of Pakistan’s Test team. In addition to the coaching role, he may also be included in the national selection committee, giving him a direct role in shaping the future of Pakistan’s red-ball cricket.
Younis Khan is widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s greatest Test batsmen. He remains the country’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket and has previously worked with the national team in coaching and mentoring capacities. His extensive experience in the longest format is believed to be a major factor behind the PCB’s interest in assigning him a more prominent role.
Former captain and all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez is also expected to receive an important position within the board’s structure. Sources indicated that Hafeez is likely to be appointed as the PCB’s Director of International Cricket, a role that would involve overseeing various aspects of Pakistan’s international cricket operations.
In addition to the administrative position, Hafeez may also be given responsibilities within the national selection committee. Such a move would place him among the key figures involved in player evaluation, squad selection and strategic planning for the national teams.
The reported restructuring could also bring significant changes to Pakistan’s Test team leadership. Sources suggested that current Test captain Shan Masood and Test team coach Sarfaraz Ahmed may be removed from their respective positions as part of the proposed overhaul.
Shan Masood has led Pakistan in the Test format during a challenging period, while Sarfaraz Ahmed has been associated with the coaching setup after previously captaining Pakistan to major international success, including the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy triumph.
Despite the expected changes, Sarfaraz Ahmed is likely to remain associated with the PCB. Sources said he is expected to continue working with the Pakistan Shaheens setup, where he could focus on the development of emerging cricketers and strengthening the country’s talent pipeline.
The possible appointments of Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez reflect a growing trend of involving former international players in decision-making and management roles. PCB officials believe that the experience and cricketing knowledge of former captains can help improve team performance, strengthen player development and bring greater stability to the national cricket structure.
However, the PCB has not yet issued any official statement regarding the reported appointments, leadership changes or restructuring plans. Any decisions regarding coaching positions, team captaincy and management roles are expected to be announced formally after internal consultations and approval from the board.
