Minhas played a key role in restricting Australia to 200 runs in 44.1 overs, helping Pakistan secure a memorable victory in the opening match of the series.
Making his first appearance in ODI cricket, the youngster displayed exceptional composure and maturity beyond his years. Using disciplined left-arm spin and clever variations, he dismantled Australia’s batting lineup and consistently troubled the visitors throughout his spell.
His figures of 5-32 now stand as the best bowling performance by a Pakistan player on ODI debut, setting a new national record.
Before Minhas’ achievement, no Pakistani bowler had managed a five-wicket haul in their first ODI appearance. Some of the country’s greatest bowlers, including legendary leg-spinner Abdul Qadir and veteran fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz, had taken four wickets on debut, but none had reached the five-wicket mark.
The record-breaking performance highlights Minhas’ rapid rise through Pakistan’s cricket system. Widely regarded as one of the country’s most promising young all-rounders, he first gained attention through impressive performances in age-group cricket, particularly at the Under-19 level.
His consistent displays in domestic cricket and T20 competitions earned him opportunities with the national team, and he had already represented Pakistan in T20 Internationals before receiving his maiden ODI cap.
The debut could hardly have come on a bigger occasion. Pakistan handed Minhas his first ODI appearance in the team’s 1,000th ODI match, adding even greater significance to the achievement.
His outstanding spell included crucial wickets that shifted the momentum firmly in Pakistan’s favour and prevented Australia from building substantial partnerships.
The performance not only secured his place in Pakistan cricket history but also strengthened his credentials as one of the country’s emerging stars for the future.
