AR Rahman Reflects On Spiritual Power Of Zikr And Sacred Words

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has shared his thoughts on the spiritual significance of Zikr (remembrance), saying that certain sacred names and words carry a power that extends beyond their literal meaning.

Speaking during a recent podcast conversation with host Faridoon, Rahman explained that some words become spiritually potent through generations of faith, devotion and belief.

When asked about the importance of Zikr in his life, Rahman agreed that it represents much more than simple remembrance.

“Certain names have power… in any religion, certain names have potency,” he said.

The celebrated musician explained that the strength associated with sacred names develops over time through the faith and reverence attached to them by believers.

“It’s because of years and years of something in it,” Rahman remarked.

Discussing Sufi traditions, Rahman said that sending salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is believed to bring spiritual blessings and rewards.

“The moment you give salutations, you get multiple returns,” he said.

Rahman also spoke about the mystical dimension of Zikr, explaining that many spiritual traditions believe sacred words can transform the atmosphere of a place.

“The moment you mention it, there are celestial beings which come and say, ‘Yes, this is a great place to be,’” he said.

Connecting spirituality with music, the composer noted that songs containing sacred invocations can create a unique energy and emotional environment.

“When you do a song like that, the whole place gets an aura of that energy,” Rahman said, adding that positive thoughts and intentions may manifest through such experiences.

The renowned composer further reflected on why certain places are often regarded as blessed or fortunate.

“Certain places on earth are blessed. Why? Because of the people who blessed that place, or the celestial being maybe touched that place and went, and you don’t even know,” he explained.

According to Rahman, this may be why people often feel a special connection with particular homes, cities or locations.

“People say, ‘Oh, this house is lucky for me, that place is lucky for me,’ and we believe that because we feel certain energy,” he said.

Rahman emphasized that he does not view such beliefs as superstition but rather as realities that may not yet be fully understood.

“It’s not superstition. It’s things which you don’t know,” he said.

Concluding the discussion, Rahman suggested that sacred words, especially when expressed through music, have the potential to create an impact that transcends the physical world.

“If you invoke certain words… it has got the potential to go beyond the physical realm,” he said.
