The convention, held from July 1 to July 5 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida, came under scrutiny after images circulated online showing that Imran Khan’s portrait had allegedly been modified on one of the event banners.
The incident quickly drew criticism on social media, with supporters of the jailed PTI founder describing it as deliberate censorship and an insult to national pride. Many demanded an explanation from the organisers and called for accountability.

Former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri and PTI leader Dr Sajjad Burki were among those who publicly criticised the organisers. They called on APPNA President Dr Babar K. Rao to issue a formal apology, linking the controversy to broader concerns over Imran Khan’s imprisonment since August 2023.
In response, APPNA issued a statement acknowledging the controversy. The organisation’s Host Committee Chair said the altered banner had not been properly inspected before being displayed and described the incident as an oversight rather than an intentional act.

APPNA President Dr Babar K. Rao also apologised for the incident and expressed regret over the concerns it had caused. He maintained that the convention included several other displays and tributes recognising Imran Khan, rejecting suggestions that the organisation had deliberately targeted the former prime minister.
Despite the apology, the controversy continued to generate debate among overseas Pakistanis, with many supporters insisting that a more thorough explanation was needed. The incident has further fuelled discussions within the Pakistani diaspora over political sensitivities and freedom of expression at community events.
