Who Will Form the Next AJK Government? PML-N Takes Early Lead, But Race Is Far From Over

The race to form the next government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) remains wide open despite Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) taking an early lead in the first phase of the elections.
Following polling in the 13 constituencies of Mirpur Division, unofficial results show PML-N winning the majority of the declared seats, giving the party an early advantage ahead of the remaining phases. However, the outcome of the election will not be decided until voting is completed across all regions of AJK.

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly consists of 53 seats, including 45 directly elected seats and eight reserved seats for women and technocrats. A party or alliance must command the support of at least 27 members to secure a simple majority and elect the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Although PML-N has made a strong start, the election is only in its first phase. Polling in Muzaffarabad Division and the 12 refugee constituencies will be held on August 2, while the final phase in Poonch (Rawalakot) Division is scheduled for August 10. Together, these constituencies will determine which party emerges as the largest force in the Legislative Assembly.

If a single party secures at least 27 seats after the allocation of reserved seats, it will be in a position to form the government independently. However, if no party reaches the majority mark, coalition negotiations and support from independents or smaller political groups could become decisive in determining the next government.
With more than two-thirds of the electoral process still to be completed, political analysts say it is too early to predict the final outcome. While PML-N currently holds the momentum, the results from Muzaffarabad Division, Poonch Division and the refugee constituencies will ultimately decide who forms the next government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
