Axact is a Pakistani company, founded by Shoaib Shaikh, which claims to be the largest IT company in Pakistan. On 18th May 2015, a New York Times report was published by investigative journalist DECLAN WALSH that the software house Axact runs various websites which offers online degrees in programs, like civil engineering and nursing, and most importantly the certificates of these programs are given with the signature of US Secretary of State John Kerry. It was the company’s sales tactics of using US government officials.

Axact makes tens of millions of dollars annually by offering diplomas and degrees online through hundreds of fictitious schools. Fake accreditation bodies and testimonials lend the schools an air of credibility. But when customers call, they are talking to Axact sales clerks in Karachi.

Following the story by NYT, Pakistan’s investigative authority FIA launched an official probe with the official orders of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan after which Axact’s offices in Karachi and Rawalpindi were raided, employees arrested and computer equipments confiscated.

Following the scandal, many seasoned journalists and anchorperson also quitted “BOL”, a channel project by the parent company Axact.

After an initial investigation and FIA’s further raid which claimed to have found more than a lac empty degrees and fake student ID cards, Shoaib Sheikh along with company’s other directors were arrested. An official FIR against Shoaib Shaikh and Axact company was also launched. A local court has sent the Axact’s officials on physical remand as well.
