Pakistan marks 17 years since historic 2009 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumph

Pakistan is celebrating the 17th anniversary of its historic ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victory, a milestone that remains one of the most memorable moments in the country’s sporting history.
On June 21, 2009, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London to lift its first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup trophy. Led by captain Younis Khan, the team overcame the heartbreak of its defeat to India in the 2007 final to secure its maiden T20 world title.

After restricting Sri Lanka to 138 for six in their allotted 20 overs, Pakistan chased down the target with eight balls to spare, reaching 139 for two in 18.4 overs. Openers Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan provided a solid start with a 48-run opening partnership before Shahid Afridi guided the team to victory with an unbeaten 54 off 40 balls. Afridi was named Player of the Match for his match-winning knock.
Pakistan’s title-winning campaign was built on a series of outstanding individual performances. Fast bowler Umar Gul finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets in seven matches. His remarkable spell of 5 for 6 against New Zealand in the Super Eight stage remains one of the finest bowling displays in T20 World Cup history.
Afridi played a decisive all-round role throughout the tournament, scoring 176 runs and claiming 11 wickets. He struck two crucial half-centuries, including 51 against South Africa in the semi-final and his unbeaten 54 in the final against Sri Lanka.
Reflecting on the triumph, Umar Gul said the team entered the tournament determined not to repeat the mistakes that had cost Pakistan the 2007 title. He recalled that the squad’s confidence grew with each successive victory and that the players gradually became convinced they could lift the trophy.
Gul described Shahid Afridi’s stunning catch during his five-wicket haul against New Zealand as a turning point in the campaign. He also remembered the scenes of celebration after the final, saying thousands of Pakistani supporters gathered outside Lord’s and the team took nearly two hours to leave the stadium because of the fans’ excitement.
Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq said winning the 2009 T20 World Cup was especially meaningful because the disappointment of the 2007 final defeat was still fresh in the players’ minds. He credited the victory over New Zealand for strengthening the team’s belief and highlighted Afridi’s form and Pakistan’s bowling attack as the key reasons behind the title-winning campaign.
Current Pakistan spinner Sajid Khan also shared his memories of the historic achievement. He recalled that he was playing under-13 cricket in Peshawar at the time and did not have a television at home. Sajid said he learned about Pakistan’s victory the following morning through his brother’s mobile phone and was thrilled to see the national team win a major ICC event.
Pakistan batter Imam-ul-Haq said the memories of the 2009 T20 World Cup remain vivid even today. He recalled following every Pakistan match despite having school examinations and described both the semi-final and final as unforgettable.
Imam said Shahid Afridi’s match-winning innings, Kamran Akmal’s aggressive batting, Umar Gul’s lethal yorkers, Younis Khan’s leadership, the emergence of young pacer Mohammad Amir and Saeed Ajmal’s effective spin bowling remain among his strongest memories from the tournament. He added that he watched the final alongside his mathematics teacher and, while balancing studies and cricket, was unable to celebrate extensively.
