Punjab Budget 2026-27 Nears Finalisation With No New Taxes Expected

  • Punjab’s upcoming budget is expected to exceed Rs6 trillion with no new taxes proposed.
  • Development spending of around Rs1.5 trillion is under consideration for the next fiscal year.
  • Education, health, agriculture, roads, sanitation and law and order are expected to remain key priorities.

The Punjab government has entered the final stages of preparing its budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, with officials indicating that no new taxes are currently planned as part of the province’s financial strategy for the coming year.

According to sources within the provincial Finance Ministry, the total size of the upcoming budget is expected to be around Rs6,000 billion, making it one of the largest budgets in Punjab’s history.

Despite the decision not to introduce new taxes, the government is reportedly considering measures to broaden the existing tax base and review service-related rates in an effort to enhance revenue collection without placing additional tax burdens on the public.

The upcoming budget is expected to focus heavily on key public service sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, roads, sanitation and law and order. Officials say the government also intends to prioritize initiatives aimed at ensuring the availability of affordable food for citizens.

Sources indicate that the budget is likely to be presented before the Punjab Assembly during the second week of June.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is expected to play a prominent role during the budget proceedings and is likely to attend all sessions related to the presentation and discussion of the provincial financial plan.

The province is also expected to receive more than Rs450 billion through transfers under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, which will contribute significantly to provincial revenues.

For comparison, Punjab’s budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 stood at Rs5,335 billion. The proposed increase reflects the government’s plans to expand development spending and support major public sector initiatives across the province.

According to officials, development expenditure of approximately Rs1,500 billion is being proposed for the next fiscal year. The allocation is expected to fund infrastructure projects, social sector programmes and other development initiatives designed to improve public services and stimulate economic activity.

Government employees may also receive salary and pension increases in line with adjustments announced by the federal government. Sources said provincial authorities are closely monitoring federal budget decisions before finalising their own compensation proposals.

All provincial departments have already submitted their budget recommendations to the Finance Ministry, which is currently reviewing spending priorities and resource allocations ahead of the final budget presentation.
