KP Budget 2026-27 To Prioritise 218 Major Projects, Focus On Completing Ongoing Schemes
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa plans to prioritise 218 key development projects in the next fiscal year’s budget.
- Around 80% of development funds will be allocated to ongoing projects, with only 20% reserved for new schemes.
- The government aims to reduce the carry-forward burden to Rs1.5 trillion and focus on mega development projects.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has intensified preparations for Budget 2026-27, with a new strategy centered on completing major development projects, improving resource allocation and reducing the burden of unfinished schemes.
According to sources in the provincial Finance Department, work is underway to finalize the budget framework for the upcoming fiscal year. As part of the planning process, the government has decided in principle to identify and prioritise 218 major development projects that will receive special attention and funding in the new budget.

Officials said these projects have been selected as priority schemes and will be completed at all costs to ensure better development outcomes and prevent delays that have affected public projects in the past.
A key feature of the budget strategy is the decision to direct the majority of development resources toward ongoing projects. The Finance Department has proposed allocating 80 percent of the development budget to projects already under implementation, while the remaining 20 percent will be reserved for new schemes planned for the next fiscal year.
The move is aimed at avoiding the fragmentation of financial resources and ensuring that existing projects receive adequate funding for timely completion.
Provincial authorities have also decided to place greater emphasis on mega development projects rather than spreading funds across a large number of small initiatives. Officials believe concentrating resources on larger projects will produce stronger economic and social benefits and improve the overall pace of development across the province.
According to Finance Department sources, the total number of development projects included in the upcoming budget is expected to be limited to around 2,500. The government hopes this approach will help improve planning, monitoring and implementation of development schemes.
Another major objective of the upcoming budget is to reduce the carry-forward burden of incomplete projects. Sources said the provincial government has decided to bring the carry-forward amount down to approximately Rs1.5 trillion as part of broader efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline and improve development management.
Officials believe that reducing the backlog of unfinished projects will allow future governments to focus more effectively on new development priorities rather than allocating large amounts of funding to old schemes.
The proposed strategy reflects a shift toward project completion, efficient use of public funds and long-term development planning. By prioritising 218 key projects, allocating most development resources to ongoing schemes and focusing on large-scale infrastructure and development initiatives, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government aims to accelerate progress while reducing the financial burden associated with incomplete projects.
The final allocations and development priorities are expected to be formally announced when the provincial budget for fiscal year 2026-27 is presented.
