Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a series of development commitments for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), including 10 electric buses for Mirpur and support for the construction of an international airport if the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) forms the next government in the region.

Addressing an election rally in Mirpur on Friday, Maryam Nawaz said she was pleased to gift 10 electric buses to the city, adding that the party would also work to establish an international airport in Mirpur to improve connectivity and boost development.

Calling herself the “daughter of Kashmir”, she said she had previously made the same statement during a visit to Muzaffarabad. She added that her grandparents from both sides of the family were Kashmiris, making Kashmir an integral part of her identity.

The Punjab chief minister expressed concern over the condition of roads in Mirpur, saying the deteriorating infrastructure did not reflect the sacrifices and contributions made by the people of Kashmir for Pakistan.

Referring to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz said he had promised to establish an international airport in Mirpur and had always honoured the commitments he made to the public.

She also pledged to introduce more development projects across Azad Kashmir, including modern public transport, improved healthcare facilities, free home delivery of medicines, ration cards and welfare programmes based on the successful initiatives launched in Punjab.

Without naming any political opponents, Maryam Nawaz criticised rival leaders, saying some politicians claimed credit while seeking power but shifted responsibility to the federal government when it came to solving public problems.

She further said that many of the roads currently used in the region had been built during Nawaz Sharif’s previous governments, adding that PML-N had played a significant role in the development of Azad Kashmir.

Maryam Nawaz concluded by saying that if PML-N wins the upcoming elections, it will deliver modern transport, healthcare and public welfare programmes throughout Azad Kashmir while ensuring the delivery of 10 electric buses for the people of Mirpur.
