Former Afghan Army General Sami Sadat Launches Armed Campaign Against Taliban

Former Afghan National Army Lieutenant General Sami Sadat has announced the launch of a coordinated armed campaign against the Taliban under the banner of the Afghanistan United Front (AUF), declaring the beginning of what he described as a nationwide effort to restore constitutional rule in Afghanistan.
Appearing in military uniform beneath the tricolour flag of the former Afghan Republic for the first time since the Taliban returned to power nearly five years ago, General Sadat addressed supporters and confirmed that the AUF had formally authorised the start of phased military operations across the country.

According to Sadat, the first phase of the campaign will focus on Taliban fighters, military installations and senior leadership. He said the operations will gradually expand nationwide while being supported by coordinated political, diplomatic and public mobilisation efforts aimed at rebuilding a constitutional state.
The former general said repeated appeals from the Afghan people and civil society over the past five years had been ignored by the international community. He argued that attempts to negotiate with the Taliban had failed, leaving armed resistance as the only remaining path to restore a free and democratic Afghanistan.
Sadat accused the Taliban of ruling through repression, fear and systematic human rights abuses. He also alleged that Afghanistan has become a safe haven for Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State (ISIS), Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups, claiming the country’s natural resources are being exploited to finance and strengthen these organisations.
Calling for national unity, Sadat urged former members of the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces, political leaders and Afghans both inside and outside the country to unite under the former republic’s tricolour flag and join the Afghanistan United Front.
He clarified that the AUF is not seeking the deployment of foreign troops or the establishment of foreign military bases. Instead, he appealed to the international community for political and material support while insisting that Afghan forces themselves would lead the fight against the Taliban and other militant organisations.
Sadat pledged that AUF operations would comply with international humanitarian law and prioritise the protection of civilians. He also declared that the Afghanistan United Front considers itself the legitimate continuation of the former Afghan National Army.
He concluded by saying the Front’s ultimate objective is to restore an independent and constitutional Afghanistan based on the 2004 Constitution, international humanitarian law and the will of the Afghan people expressed through a Loya Jirga.
