Fahad Mustafa Appeals To Punjab Government Over Cinema Closing Times

Pakistani actor and producer Fahad Mustafa has urged the Punjab government to extend cinema operating hours, saying current restrictions are hurting the film industry and affecting audience turnout for newly released movies.
In a letter addressed to Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, which he later shared on Instagram, Mustafa requested a review of the existing policy that requires malls and commercial centers to close early as part of energy-saving and austerity measures.

The actor pointed out that most cinemas operate inside shopping malls, meaning they are directly impacted by the restricted business hours. According to him, the policy is limiting access for moviegoers and reducing the number of screenings available during peak evening hours.
Mustafa said the timing restrictions are particularly challenging for films that have recently been released and depend heavily on strong box office performance during their initial weeks in cinemas.
“The early closure is affecting recently released films that are relying on this period to reach audiences,” he wrote in the letter.
He argued that a slight extension in cinema operating hours could significantly benefit the entertainment sector by increasing ticket sales, improving revenues for cinema operators and distributors, and supporting employment linked to cinemas, restaurants and other hospitality businesses.
The actor also noted that many people prefer to watch films later in the evening after work or other commitments, making extended operating hours more convenient for audiences.
The appeal comes as Mustafa’s latest film, “Zombeid,” is currently playing in cinemas across Pakistan following its Eid ul Adha release. Industry observers say box office collections often depend on evening and late-night shows, especially during holiday periods and weekends.
In his message, Mustafa thanked the Punjab government for its support of the film industry, highlighting initiatives such as the proposed Film City project. He said such efforts have encouraged filmmakers and creative professionals and expressed hope that authorities would consider easing the restrictions for cinemas.
The Punjab government introduced revised operating hours for markets and public venues under broader austerity and energy conservation measures aimed at reducing electricity consumption. However, cinema owners and members of the film industry have repeatedly argued that the restrictions have negatively affected business and audience attendance.
