CM Maryam Approves E-Buses for Southern Punjab, Additional Fleet for Major Cities

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Monday directed the accelerated deployment of electric buses to underdeveloped regions, particularly the southern districts of the province, as part of a broader push for balanced and eco-friendly infrastructure development under the Punjab Clean Air Program.
Presiding over a high-level review meeting on transport department projects, CM Maryam emphasized that the benefits of modern public services must no longer be limited to major urban centers. “We must end the culture of giving every new facility to major cities first. Our villages and small towns must be brought at par with urban centers,” she stated.

In line with this vision, the Chief Minister ordered the immediate distribution of 240 electric buses across 24 priority districts during the first phase of the initiative. These districts, many of them located in South Punjab, have historically lagged in access to modern transportation.
The clean transport project, a flagship of the Punjab Clean Air Program, is designed to both reduce air pollution and enhance public mobility options in underserved areas. It represents a shift toward inclusive policy-making that integrates environmental goals with regional equity.
As part of the next phase, an additional 500 electric buses will be rolled out in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Rawalpindi between August and October 2025. A further 600 e-buses are scheduled to arrive from November to December, dramatically scaling up the province’s green transport infrastructure.
Officials said the project will create a reliable and pollution-free public transport network across Punjab, benefiting commuters in both urban hubs and remote communities. CM Maryam also underscored the need for transparency and efficiency in the execution of these projects, directing relevant departments to ensure timely delivery and operational readiness.
