Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Urban Flooding, and Flash Flood Risks till July 5

The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued comprehensive weather alerts across multiple regions of Pakistan, warning of potential urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides due to widespread rain and thunderstorms forecasted from June 29 to July 5, 2025.

The alert highlights a significant risk of heavy rainfall in key regions including Kashmir, Northeast Punjab, the Potohar plateau, Islamabad, and upper and central parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. NEOC anticipates that these weather conditions could lead to urban flooding, particularly in low-lying and densely populated urban centers.

According to the NEOC, the most vulnerable areas between June 29 and July 3 include Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, and Kohat in Central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In the Potohar region—comprising Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Chakwal, and Attock—urban flooding is likely, especially during nighttime hours between 9:00 PM and 4:00 AM on June 29.

Rain-related emergencies are also expected in North Eastern Punjab’s low-lying districts such as Jhelum, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Narowal, and Lahore. Additionally, Faisalabad and Sargodha divisions may witness high rainfall activity, raising the possibility of localized flooding.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for northern areas including Hazara and Malakand Divisions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the lower reaches of Jhelum and Poonch Valleys in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the Pir Panjal range in northeastern Punjab. NEOC further noted a likelihood of low-level flooding in the River Kabul at Nowshera, medium flows in the Swat River, and downstream flows in Tarbela and Chenab rivers at Khanki and Qadirabad.

Streams and tributaries of the River Chitral and Hunza—including Kunjrab, Ghujerab, Kilik, Chapursan, and Shimshal Braldu Rivers—are also at risk of flash flooding. These conditions may result in transportation disruptions, landslides, and outages in communication and electricity in mountainous regions.

In southern Pakistan, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta, and Karachi between June 29 and July 5. Urban flooding risks in Karachi Division are expected to intensify from July 2, especially in low-lying districts of Hyderabad, Thatta, and Badin, where rainwater accumulation could trigger localized flooding and emergency situations.

NDMA has urged provincial and district administrations to activate contingency plans immediately, remain on high alert, and ensure timely dissemination of weather warnings in local languages. Citizens are advised to avoid travel near rivers, glacial streams, and flood-prone areas, keep emergency kits ready, and follow official advisories.
