Since June 13, Iran and Israel have been engaged in direct aerial conflict, triggered by a surprise Israeli attack targeting multiple locations in Iran, including military and nuclear sites. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes. The situation escalated further when the United States launched strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities early Sunday. U.S. President Donald Trump claimed the attacks caused significant damage, describing them as acts of “obliteration.”
During the meeting, Putin expressed his appreciation for the Iranian delegation’s visit to Moscow, stating that it provided an opportunity to openly discuss the critical issues facing both nations and the region. He also asked Araghchi to convey his warm regards to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Araghchi, in response, criticized the actions of the United States and Israel, blaming them for fueling instability in the Middle East. He pointed out that the strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have significantly worsened the situation. He also highlighted the strategic depth of Russia-Iran ties, stating that relations have grown even closer in recent years.
Calling Russia a nation on the “right side of history and international law,” Araghchi thanked Moscow for its strong condemnation of the strikes. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between both countries in dealing with the challenges unfolding in the region.
