PPP Emerges As Front-Runner In Gilgit-Baltistan Elections 2026 As Unofficial Results Continue To Arrive

• Unofficial results show PPP leading the Gilgit-Baltistan elections with the highest number of seats so far.
• Independent candidates have also performed strongly across several constituencies.
• Polling remained peaceful across the region with authorities reporting satisfactory law and order.

The counting of votes is continuing across Gilgit-Baltistan after polling for 24 seats of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly concluded peacefully on Sunday. Unofficial and preliminary results indicate that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the leading political force in the region, securing victories in multiple constituencies and positioning itself to become the largest party in the new assembly.

According to unofficial results received from a majority of constituencies, PPP has so far secured nine seats, while independent candidates have won six seats. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) have also managed to secure representation in the assembly.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari welcomed the early results and said the party was emerging as the largest political force in Gilgit-Baltistan. Referring to the PPP’s election symbol, he remarked that the “arrow is raining in Gilgit-Baltistan” and expressed confidence that the party would make efforts to form the next regional government. He also thanked the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for placing their trust in PPP candidates.

The elections witnessed participation from 403 candidates, including 396 male and eight female candidates. A total of 963,034 registered voters were eligible to cast their votes, including 566,097 men and 396,937 women.

Polling started at 8am and continued uninterrupted until 5pm. Election authorities reported a smooth voting process across the region, with a notable turnout among women voters.

Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz personally visited several polling stations during the day to monitor arrangements and review the voting process. After polling concluded, he stated that the election was conducted peacefully and that polling staff and security personnel performed their duties efficiently.

He said the law and order situation remained satisfactory throughout the day and that the overall electoral process was completed in a peaceful environment.

However, concerns were also raised by PPP leaders during polling. PPP Secretary General Nadeem Afzal Chan alleged that attempts were made in some areas to influence the electoral process, though election authorities maintained that polling remained orderly across the region.

The most closely watched constituencies produced a mix of results, with PPP candidates securing important victories in Gilgit, Nagar, Skardu, Shigar and Ghizer, while independent candidates recorded significant wins in Hunza, Ghizer and Ghanche.
