PMD predicts rain, snowfall in upper parts of Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a spell of rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall in the upper parts of the country starting December 7, as a westerly wave approaches the region. The cold wave conditions, expected to persist from December 8 to 14, are likely to bring much-needed relief to smog-affected areas.

According to the PMD, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with daytime and nighttime temperatures forecasted to be 4-6°C below normal in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. In Balochistan and Sindh, temperatures could fall 5-7°C below average. Cold gusty winds are also likely in Sindh, Balochistan, and parts of Punjab, with frost expected to develop over plains.

Rain and Snowfall Forecast
Moderate rain and thunderstorms accompanied by snowfall over the hills are expected in regions including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Buner, Shangla, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Kohistan, Astore, Ghizer, Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, and Muzaffarabad. This weather pattern will likely continue from December 7 (night) to December 11, with occasional breaks.

Light to moderate rain and snowfall are forecasted for areas like Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Jhelum, Chakwal, and Faisalabad from the night of December 7 to the afternoon of December 8.

Precautionary Measures and Impacts
The PMD has advised farmers to adjust their activities according to the forecast, particularly in frost-prone areas. Citizens are encouraged to avoid prolonged exposure to cold and windy weather, especially during the night and early morning.

Tourists and travelers heading to mountainous regions are urged to exercise caution due to slippery conditions and possible disruptions. Relevant authorities have been alerted to prepare for potential weather-related challenges, especially in northern areas.

The upcoming weather changes are expected to bring temporary relief to smog-hit areas, enhancing air quality while marking the onset of intensified winter conditions across the country.
