Monsoon Rains Hit Lahore as CM Maryam Nawaz Orders Round-the-Clock Emergency Response

A fierce thunderstorm accompanied by torrential monsoon rain swept across Lahore on Sunday, disrupting power supply in several areas but bringing much-needed relief from the prolonged spell of humidity. In response, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered the immediate implementation of 24/7 emergency measures to manage the situation.

The downpour affected multiple key areas of the city, including Shimla Pahari, Abbott Road, Davis Road, Mall Road, Shadman, Gulberg, Scheme Moor, Mughalpura, Dharampura, the Airport, Muslim Town, Allama Iqbal Town, Wahdat Road, Mustafa Town, and Yateem Khana. While residents welcomed the cooler weather, the rain and powerful winds led to the tripping of 178 LESCO feeders, leaving many neighborhoods without electricity.

Following the storm, the Punjab government activated its monsoon emergency plan. CM Maryam Nawaz directed district administrations to establish Emergency Operation Centers in every district, which will operate around the clock. She also instructed authorities to provide real-time updates on the execution of the emergency measures.

According to a government spokesperson, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has circulated detailed safety protocols to mitigate risks during the monsoon season. CM Maryam emphasized the need to identify and monitor dangerous buildings and urged residents in unsafe structures to relocate as a precautionary measure.

She called upon Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and rescue agencies to maintain full readiness and underscored that public safety must be the top priority. “All departments must act with urgency and vigilance. Our foremost duty is to protect lives,” she stated, appealing to citizens to adhere strictly to official safety guidelines.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert, warning of continued heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan due to accelerated glacier melt. Emergency response units across the country have been placed on high alert in preparation for potential crises.
