Monsoon Havoc in Punjab Leaves 18 Dead, 57 Injured; PDMA Issues Fresh Urban Flood Alert

Heavy monsoon rains have claimed at least 18 lives, including 11 children, and left 57 others injured across Punjab in the past 24 hours, according to a report released Monday by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The casualties primarily resulted from the collapse of dilapidated buildings and rooftops amid intense downpours.
The PDMA factsheet noted that 27 houses sustained damage due to the ongoing rains. In separate incidents, two individuals lost their lives due to lightning strikes in Khanewal and Okara, while two children were electrocuted in Mandi Bahauddin.

The first phase of the monsoon season is expected to continue until July 1, with weather officials warning of urban flooding in major cities, including Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala. As a precautionary measure, contingency alerts have been issued across the province.
Authorities have also imposed a ban on swimming and bathing in rivers, canals, and rainwater drains, citing safety concerns. PDMA Punjab’s Director General urged the public to avoid risky areas and follow official guidelines during the ongoing weather emergency.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also been severely affected, with PDMA Pakhtunkhwa reporting 20 deaths and several injuries due to rain-related incidents and flash floods over the weekend. Emergency response teams remain on high alert as the monsoon threat continues across multiple provinces.
