Lahore’s Air Quality Improves as AQI Drops Below 200

Lahore witnessed a significant improvement in its air quality on Saturday, offering much-needed relief to residents after days of hazardous pollution levels. The city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped below the 200-mark, a notable improvement compared to previous readings.

Environmental data indicated that most areas in Lahore recorded AQI levels below 200, with the city’s average AQI reported at 143. While this still falls under the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category, it marks a decline in pollution levels. However, PM2.5 concentration in the city remains 10.5 times higher than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual air quality guideline value.

Among the city’s key locations, MM Alam Road reported the highest AQI at 304, remaining the only area with levels exceeding the 200 threshold. Other areas showed comparatively better air quality, with Sundar recording an AQI of 168, Beidian Road 163, Polo Ground Cantt 156, University of Management and Technology 153, and WWF-Pakistan 152.

Environmental experts acknowledged the improvement but cautioned that air quality is still concerning for vulnerable populations. They emphasized the need for sustained efforts to address pollution sources and ensure long-term health benefits for the city’s residents.
