Former Punjab Governor Mian Azhar Laid to Rest in Lahore

Former Punjab governor and senior politician Mian Muhammad Azhar was laid to rest on Wednesday, with funeral prayers offered outside Gaddafi Stadium. He passed away at the age of 82.
A large number of people, including political leaders, family members, and friends, attended the funeral. The prayers were led by Sheikh-ul-Hadith Prof Maulana Muhammad Yousuf Khan. Among the prominent attendees were Dunya Media Group Chairman Mian Amer Mahmood, MD Naveed Kashif, former foreign minister Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, and retired Lieutenant General Arshad Mehmood. Punjab Sports Minister Faisal Khokhar, PTI leaders Jamshed Iqbal Cheema and Farrukh Javed Moon, as well as PML-N leader Khawaja Hassan Ahmad, were also present to pay their respects.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif expressed grief over Mian Azhar’s death and extended condolences to his family. Nawaz Sharif, recalling the close relationship between their fathers, prayed for the departed soul, saying, “May Allah Almighty grant forgiveness to Mian Muhammad Azhar and give patience to his family. Ameen.”
Mian Azhar, father of PTI leader Hammad Azhar, had a distinguished political career. He began as a grassroots worker and rose to serve as Mayor of Lahore from 1987 to 1991 and Governor of Punjab from 1990 to 1992. Initially affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), he later became the founding president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) during Nawaz Sharif’s exile. In October 2011, he joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and continued his political journey.
In the February 2024 general elections, Mian Azhar was elected as a Member of the National Assembly from NA-129 (Lahore-XIII), marking his return to parliamentary politics. His death marks the end of an era for Punjab’s political landscape, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum.
