AIOU Launches Free Matric Education Program for Balochistan, GB, and Tribal Districts

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has launched a landmark initiative to provide free matric-level education for students in Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the merged tribal districts (formerly FATA). The program, introduced under AIOU’s “Education for All” vision, aims to eliminate financial barriers and promote equal access to education in some of the country’s most underserved regions.

According to an official press release issued on Wednesday, the initiative is part of the university’s broader mission to ensure that students from remote and economically challenged areas are not deprived of learning opportunities. AIOU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Nasir Mahmood emphasized the university’s commitment to inclusive education and directed regional heads to actively spread awareness about the program to every village and household within the targeted areas.

Dr Mahmood described the move as a “historic stride toward educational equity and social uplift,” asserting that every child in Pakistan deserves the chance to learn and participate in the country’s progress. He also called on parents, teachers, and community leaders to support the initiative by encouraging eligible students to take advantage of this opportunity.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted the potential impact of the program, noting that it could significantly improve literacy rates in areas that have long been neglected in terms of educational investment. He reaffirmed that no child should be denied education due to economic hardship.

Admissions for Autumn 2025 are now open for all academic programs, ranging from Matric to PhD levels. Students interested in enrolling under the free matric scheme are encouraged to visit their nearest AIOU regional office to begin their academic journey.
