Peter Moor Retires From International Cricket After Representing Both Zimbabwe and Ireland

Ireland batter Peter Moor has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 35, bringing an end to a unique and cross-continental career that saw him represent both Zimbabwe and Ireland at the highest level. Moor made a total of 85 international appearances and scored 1925 runs with 11 half-centuries at an average of 22.91.

Born in Harare, Moor began his international journey with Zimbabwe, making his debut in a One Day International against Bangladesh in Mirpur in November 2014. He later made his Test and T20I debuts in 2016 against New Zealand and Afghanistan, respectively. During his time with Zimbabwe, he played all of his 49 ODIs, 21 T20Is, and eight Tests, averaging 35.53 in the longest format with five fifties.

In 2022, Moor became eligible to play for Ireland, holding an Irish passport through his paternal grandmother’s heritage. He was included in Ireland’s Test squad for their tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in early 2023 and went on to play seven Tests for the country. However, he did not feature in any ODIs or T20Is for Ireland.

Despite a strong start to his Test career with Zimbabwe, Moor struggled to replicate that form after switching to Ireland. His average in Tests dropped to 14.35, managing only one fifty during his time with the Irish side. That lone half-century, however, came in a memorable win over his former team Zimbabwe in July 2024.

Reflecting on his career, Moor had previously expressed hope of continuing at the top level and representing Ireland in a future World Cup. Although that goal remained unfulfilled, he retires as one of only 17 players in cricket history to have played Test matches for two different countries.

Moor played his final international match earlier this year in February, in a one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. His retirement marks the close of a rare and eventful chapter in international cricket, spanning continents and two national sides.
