Pakistan relaxes visa policy for cricket fans amid hosting Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan is gearing up to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, marking a significant milestone for cricket in the country. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced on Wednesday that the government will ease visa policies for cricket fans worldwide to ensure a seamless and welcoming experience for attendees of the much-anticipated tournament.

Speaking at the concluding ceremony of the National T20 Champions Cup, Tarar emphasized that a relaxed visa policy will facilitate fans from around the globe to witness the Champions Trophy. He encouraged cricket enthusiasts to show their passion by attending matches, supporting their favorite teams, and warmly welcoming visiting players and officials.

The eight-team tournament will feature 15 day-night matches, starting February 19, 2025, in Karachi. The event will be played across Pakistan and Dubai under a “hybrid model” proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), as India opted to play its matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The group stages will see matches in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi, with each venue hosting three group games. Lahore will host the second semi-final and the grand finale on March 9, unless India qualifies, in which case the final will move to Dubai. Both semi-finals and the final will have reserve days.

The tournament opener will feature Pakistan against New Zealand in Karachi on February 19, while India will face Bangladesh in Dubai the following day. Group B action kicks off with Afghanistan taking on South Africa in Karachi on February 21. A blockbuster weekend is scheduled with England clashing against Australia in Lahore on February 22, followed by the much-anticipated Pakistan-India showdown in Dubai on February 23.

Tarar assured that all necessary measures are being implemented to ensure the security of the visiting teams. He highlighted Pakistan’s history of offering exceptional hospitality to foreign players, a sentiment echoed by past visiting teams, including India during their 2005 tour.

Efforts are also underway to make the Champions Trophy an ideal blend of sports and entertainment. Special cultural and entertainment programs will be arranged alongside matches to promote Pakistan’s rich heritage and tourism.

The return of a major international cricket event is a significant step in improving Pakistan’s image globally. “The return of cricket to home grounds is a milestone that has enhanced Pakistan’s reputation at the international level,” Tarar remarked. He praised the PCB, under Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, for its diligent efforts in promoting cricket and organizing successful events.

The minister also credited the PCB’s selection panel for assembling a strong national team that has achieved notable successes, including victories over Australia and South Africa on their home turf. Domestic tournaments like the Champions Cup are playing a pivotal role in nurturing emerging talent and strengthening Pakistan’s cricketing future.

Addressing India’s decision to avoid playing in Pakistan, Tarar stressed that sports should remain separate from politics. “Hurdles should not be created in sports for political advantage,” he stated, urging all stakeholders to focus on the spirit of the game. He called on fans to embrace visiting teams with enthusiasm and respect, reflecting Pakistan’s hospitality.
