Litton Das Returns as Bangladesh Announce ODI Squad for Sri Lanka Series

Bangladesh have announced a 16-member squad for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, with top-order batter and T20I captain Litton Das making a return despite a poor run in recent one-day internationals. The series, which marks Bangladesh’s first major assignment following their early exit from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, begins on July 2.

Litton’s inclusion, announced by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday, comes even though he has managed only 35 runs in his last eight ODI appearances during tours of New Zealand and the West Indies. Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain clarified the reasoning behind the decision, noting Litton’s importance as the T20 captain and the need for him to spend time at the crease to regain form. “ODIs will give him that chance to rediscover rhythm,” Ashraf said.

The squad sees the return of Mohammad Naim, Shamim Hossain, Hasan Mahmud, and left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam, who has been handed his maiden ODI call-up after appearing in six T20 internationals. Naim’s selection comes on the back of consistent performances in the domestic Dhaka Premier League, while Shamim and Hasan have impressed the selectors with their recent efforts in training and domestic matches.

Soumya Sarkar has been rested for the series to allow complete recovery from multiple injuries, including a finger fracture, back spasm, and lingering issues related to his ACL. Ashraf noted the need to manage workloads and avoid aggravating injuries as Bangladesh look to rebuild their core group.

Bangladesh’s pace attack has been strengthened with the return of Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Nahid Rana — all of whom are back from injury layoffs. The selectors have opted for a five-man fast-bowling unit to ensure rotation and maintain fitness across the series. “We’re focusing on recovery and keeping the fast bowlers fresh for what lies ahead,” Ashraf added.

The three ODIs will be played on July 2, 5, and 8. The first two matches are set to take place at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, while the final match will be held in Pallekele.
