IND vs ENG: Pant and KL Rahul Set New Records at Lord’s During 3rd Test

Indian stars Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul lit up the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground with record-breaking performances in the ongoing Test series against England. Their dominant displays not only boosted India’s position in the match but also saw them surpass some of the biggest names in cricket history.

Vice-captain Rishabh Pant battled through a finger injury to score a gutsy 74 off 112 balls on Day 3 of the third Test. Despite taking blows, he played fearlessly, hitting two sixes during his innings. With this, Pant took his tally of sixes against England in Test cricket to 35—breaking the previous record of 34 held by West Indies legend Vivian Richards.

Pant also equaled Rohit Sharma’s 88 sixes in Test cricket for India and is now just two short of Virender Sehwag’s record of 90. What makes this more impressive is that Pant achieved this in just 46 Tests, compared to Rohit’s 67.

In another major milestone, Pant overtook MS Dhoni’s long-standing record for the most runs by an Indian wicketkeeper in a single Test tour of England. Dhoni had scored 349 runs during the 2014 series, but Pant has now gone past that with 416 runs in just three matches. He also became the first visiting wicketkeeper in Test history to score more than 400 runs in a single series in England.

His innings ended just before lunch on Day 3 when a quick run attempt went wrong. England captain Ben Stokes fielded sharply and threw down the stumps to run Pant out for 74.

On the same day, KL Rahul made his own mark in the record books. The Indian opener scored a brilliant 100 off 177 balls, becoming only the second Indian after Dilip Vengsarkar to score more than one Test century at Lord’s. Vengsarkar had achieved this feat three times during his career.

This was Rahul’s fourth century in England, putting him alongside Rishabh Pant, Sachin Tendulkar, and Vengsarkar for the second-most centuries by an Indian in England. Only Rahul Dravid has more, with six. Among Indian and Asian openers, Rahul now holds the record for most Test centuries in England with three.

Rahul has also emerged as India’s top performer in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries in the 2020s. He has scored five centuries in these challenging overseas conditions—more than any other Indian player this decade. Behind him are Pant (4), Shubman Gill (3), Yashasvi Jaiswal (2), and Ravindra Jadeja (1).

With 1129 runs in 14 matches as an opener in SENA nations during the 2020s, Rahul leads all Indian batters. For comparison, Rohit Sharma has scored 691 runs in 11 matches during the same period.

In the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, KL Rahul has scored 337 runs in five innings at an average of 67.40. He is the fourth-highest run-scorer in the series so far, with two centuries and a fifty to his name.

Across his Test career, KL Rahul has scored 3593 runs from 103 innings in 61 matches at an average of 35.57, including 10 hundreds and 18 half-centuries.
