IND vs ENG 1st Test: England Opt to Bowl First as India’s Sai Sudharsan Makes Test Debut at Headingley

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to field in the opening Test against India at Headingley on Friday, setting the tone for a highly anticipated five-match series that also marks the beginning of a new World Test Championship cycle.
Despite bright sunshine and a pitch offering only a slight green tinge—conditions typically favourable for batting—Stokes chose to bowl first, citing familiarity with the ground. “Headingley is generally a good cricket wicket. We’ve had some good games here over the years, so we’ll look to use the early conditions and get a bit out of it,” he said ahead of the match.

England entered the contest with two changes from the side that recently overwhelmed Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge. Veteran seamer Chris Woakes returned to the XI, replacing the injured Gus Atkinson, while Brydon Carse was handed his first home Test cap to strengthen the pace attack.
India, meanwhile, ushered in a new era with Sai Sudharsan making his Test debut. The young left-hander was slotted to bat at number three, with newly appointed captain Shubman Gill set to anchor the middle order from number four. India’s lineup reflects a generational shift following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as the team eyes its first Test series win in England since 2007.
Gill expressed confidence in the team’s preparations. “Preparation has been amazing. I think all the boys are feeling in a good space mentally and physically,” he said before play commenced.
This Headingley Test is the first of five matches scheduled over a tightly packed seven-week period. The series is not only a litmus test for the new Indian leadership but also crucial for both teams in their quest to gain early momentum in the World Test Championship, which South Africa kicked off with a dramatic win over Australia last week at Lord’s.
In a moment of somber reflection, both sides donned black armbands to honour the victims of a recent Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad, which tragically claimed 241 lives. The gesture underscored the gravity of the tragedy and brought a poignant start to an otherwise high-stakes cricketing contest.
