Turkish actor Engin Altan, best known for his iconic portrayal in the drama series Ertugrul Ghazi, has attributed his international fame to the overwhelming support from Pakistan. Speaking recently at the Red Sea Festival in Saudi Arabia, Altan reflected on the drama’s remarkable popularity.
While Ertugrul Ghazi gained a strong following in Saudi Arabia, Altan noted that its release in Pakistan brought unprecedented recognition. He credited the Pakistani audience for elevating the series to global fame, calling them the “real elements” behind its success.
The historical drama Ertugrul Ghazi, which chronicles the life and struggles of Ertugrul Bey, the father of Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, struck a chord with Pakistani viewers. Dubbed as the “Turkish Game of Thrones,” the series became a cultural phenomenon in Pakistan, receiving massive viewership numbers, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown when it was aired on Pakistan Television (PTV) with Urdu dubbing. The show’s themes of heroism, justice, and Islamic values resonated deeply with the Pakistani audience, leading to a surge in its popularity. Fans admired the storytelling, historical significance, and Altan’s performance, which turned him into a household name across the country.
Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Imran Khan, also lauded the series for its depiction of Islamic history and urged people to watch it, further cementing its place in the hearts of the nation. The show’s success prompted collaborations between Turkish and Pakistani production houses and even led to Altan visiting Pakistan, where he was welcomed with immense love and enthusiasm by fans.
Altan also shared the challenges he faced after filming, revealing that it was difficult to step out of the character he had played for so long. Additionally, he expressed his desire to portray the role of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, in the future.
