ENG vs IND 4th Test: Fifties From Yashasvi and Sai Lift India to 264/4 on Day 1 of Manchester Test

India closed the opening day of the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Old Trafford, Manchester, on 264/4 in 83 overs, riding on crucial half-centuries from Sai Sudarshan and Yashasvi Jaiswal. At stumps, Ravindra Jadeja (19*) and Shardul Thakur (19*) remained unbeaten, adding a steady 29-run stand to finish the day.
England, who opted to field first after winning the toss, struck four times in the day but were unable to break India’s partnerships when it mattered most. Ben Stokes led the English bowling effort with figures of 2/47 in 14 overs, while Chris Woakes (1/43) and Liam Dawson (1/45) provided support with a wicket apiece.

Earlier, openers Jaiswal and KL Rahul gave India a solid start. The duo weathered testing spells from Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, and Brydon Carse, taking India to 42/0 after the first hour. Rahul’s knock also brought a personal milestone as he became only the fifth Indian batter to score 1,000 runs in England, joining legends Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli.
Jaiswal, after surviving a close chance early on, shifted gears toward the end of the first session, driving and cutting with authority. His partnership with Rahul ensured India reached 50 without losing a wicket. Jaiswal eventually brought up his half-century before being dismissed for 58.
Sai Sudarshan anchored the innings in the middle order and reached his maiden Test fifty with a boundary off Joe Root. He went on to score 61 off 151 deliveries, holding the innings together after the departure of Rahul and Jaiswal. His dismissal, caught off Ben Stokes at 235, left India four down late in the day.
The biggest scare for India came when Rishabh Pant, batting on 37, was struck on the right foot by a sharp Chris Woakes delivery. The blow caused severe swelling and bleeding, forcing Pant to retire hurt and be taken off the field via motorised assistance. Jadeja then replaced him at the crease.
India crossed the 250-run mark in the 79th over, with Shardul Thakur’s single off Dawson. The day ended with Jadeja and Thakur solid in the middle, setting up an intriguing battle for Day 2.
Brief Score: India 264/4 in 83 overs (Sai Sudarshan 61, Yashasvi Jaiswal 58; Ben Stokes 2/47, Chris Woakes 1/43, Liam Dawson 1/45) vs England.
