Bumrah Targets Three-Test Participation in England Series Amid Injury Management

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed plans to feature in only three out of the five upcoming Test matches against England, citing workload management and long-term fitness as key considerations following a serious back injury.

Bumrah, 31, has been one of India’s most effective bowlers in red-ball cricket, claiming 205 wickets at a remarkable average of under 20. His unorthodox action and ability to generate pace off a short run-up have made him a formidable force, especially in overseas conditions. However, a back injury sustained during the final Test of India’s 3-1 series loss in Australia earlier this year has prompted a more cautious approach ahead of the demanding English tour.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the series opener at Headingley on Friday, Bumrah said: “The body is feeling good, no issues, no complaints. But I have to be smart as well — I’m not getting any younger. I plan on the go, but three Test matches is what I am looking at, what I can manage at this moment.”

India is scheduled to play five Tests in less than seven weeks — a physically taxing timeline that has required careful planning by the team’s medical and coaching staff. Bumrah confirmed he will definitely play the first Test, while his participation in the remaining matches will depend on fitness assessments and workload monitoring.

“Hopefully in the games I play I give my absolute best,” he added.

With 60 wickets at an average of 22.16 in 14 Tests against England, Bumrah’s presence remains crucial for India as they chase their first Test series win in England since 2007. However, his role in the squad has evolved, with the leadership baton now passed to 25-year-old Shubman Gill following the retirements of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Bumrah, who previously captained India during their tour of Australia, clarified that his decision to step away from leadership was made proactively to ensure team stability.

“There are no fancy stories, no controversy, no headlines that I was sacked,” Bumrah said. “I discussed my workload with my doctors and surgeon. I came to the conclusion that I need to be more mindful of my body. I called the BCCI and said I don’t want to be considered for a leadership role.”

He added, “It’s not fair for the team if someone else has to lead in two Tests while I lead in three. Consistency is important.”

Bumrah underwent back surgery in 2023 and has since adopted a more measured approach to his playing schedule, aiming to extend his career across all formats. His return will be closely watched as India looks to blend youth with experience in a new era of Test cricket.
