Nawaz Sharif is the 18th and current Prime Minister of Pakistan and the leader (president) of the political party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN). He was born on 25 December, 1949 in Lahore. Nawaz Sharif entered politics in the general elections of 1985 and became the Chief Minister of Punjab. After many twists and turns, he became the Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1991 when Benazir Bhutto was forced to step down. He served as the Prime Minister for two terms during 1991 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999 before his exile from the country. During the Kargil war, tensions rose between the army chief Pervez Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif and the army ousted Nawaz Sharif’s government. Shairf returned to paksitan in 2008 and was the leader of the opposition from 2008 and 2013. His political party PML-N won the general elections 2013 and Nawaz Sharif regained his seat as the prime minister of Pakistan for the third time.
Nawaz sharif was born in Lahore on 25 December, 1949. His father, Muhammad Sharif belonged to upper middle class and was a successful businessman. The Sharif family is the Punjabis of Kashmiri origins. Nawaz Sharif is the owner of Sharif group which is a multi-billion company. The family also owns different holdings in steel mills, agriculture and transport. Nawaz Sharif is married to Kalsom Nawaz. His brother; shehbaz sharif is the chief minister of Punjab and his nephew is the deputy chief minister of Punjab. He also has a house in Jeddah in which he lived while in exile.
The political career of Nawaz Sharif started during the nationalization movement launched by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He was really devastated when the government seized control of their family’s business and joined politics to regain his property. He joined Pakistan Muslim League and he climbed the ranks soon to become the finance minister of Punjab.
In 1985, he became the chief minister of Punjab by the help of ghulam gilani khan. He served two consecutive terms as the chief minister of Punjab. On the eve of 1 November, 1990 Nawaz Sharif became the 12th prime minster of Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif focused on improving the infrastructure of the country. His party lost the general election of 1993 but came in power again in 1997. Nawaz Sharif and PML-N takes responsibility of making Pakistan a nuclear state as the nuclear tests were conducted under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif in 1998. The second tenure was short lived as tension rose between Nawaz Sharif and Pervaz Musharraf; the army chief. Nawaz Sharif was forced to leave the country.
Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan in November 2007 but he boycotted the general election as he was certain that the election will not be fair under the rule of a dictator. However, they decided to compete in the general elections after the assassination of Benazir. PML-N failed to get a majority in the national assembly but maintained a good position in the Punjab assembly. They formed a coalition government with PPP in the national assembly.
In the midst of 2011, Nawaz Sharif had to face a new rivalry and this time it came from an old friend; Imran Khan. Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif knew each other from the 1992 world cups days but they got tangled up with the bitter reality of Politics.
